2025 declared “Polygnotos Vagis Year” for the cultural activities of the Municipality of Thassos

Today, Wednesday 7 May 2025, a meeting was held at the Office of the Mayor of Thassos between the Mayor of Thassos, Mr Eleftherios Kyriakidis, the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Mr Georgios Koutsoumanis, the Deputy Mayor for Tourism and President of the Thassos Tourism Organisation, Mr Ioannis Markianos, and the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

During the meeting, and following a relevant proposal by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Culture of the Municipality of Thassos, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary this year of the death of the renowned sculptor Polygnotos Vagis, who made his birthplace known to the ends of the earth, it was decided to declare 2025 the “Polygnotos Vagis Year” for the cultural activities of the Municipality of Thassos in 2025.

It was also decided that the Municipality of Thassos cultural events for 2025, “Polygnotos Vagis Year”, will be placed under the auspices of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the Thassos Tourism Organisation.

After the meeting, the Mayor of Thassos, Mr Eleftherios Kyriakidis, stated the following: “The Municipality of Thassos, recognising the indisputable work and global reach of Polygnotos Vagis, declares 2025 the ‘Polygnotos Vagis Year’ as a modest tribute to the contribution of the Thassian artist to the world of art.

Various activities and events will be held in cooperation with cultural associations.

Respect for culture is proven through actions.”
